Pinyin is a pronunciation spelling, not a translation and not a replacement for characters in formal writing. Some characters have more than one reading: 行 may be xíng or háng. A library guesses from context and can be wrong on names and textbook examples. Check those against adding Pinyin to Chinese text.
Printed Pinyin uses marks (mā, má, mǎ, mà). Chat and some keyboards use numbers (ma1). See tone marks vs tone numbers and the four tones. If you already type numbers and only need marks, use the Pinyin Writer instead of this page.
