Traditional Chinese characters remain the written standard in Taiwan and the usual characters in Hong Kong and Macau. Many overseas newspapers, temples and schools also teach or publish in Traditional Chinese.
Reasons people give are not only political. Readers who grew up with Traditional forms find them more readable. Some argue the extra strokes preserve phonetic or semantic hints. Calligraphy and classical texts are almost always Traditional.
None of that makes Simplified Chinese unofficial in Mainland China. It means the Chinese-speaking world is big enough for two living standards.
