Some of the oldest graphs look like what they name: a sun, a moon, a tree, a horse. In oracle bone script those resemblances are stronger than in printed 宋体.
It is easy to overstate this. Chinese is not a picture language. Once you need grammar words, names and abstract verbs, pictures run out. Character structure takes over.
Modern 马 and 馬 are stylized regular-script forms, not sketches of a horse you could ride. Conversion between them is a standard-to-standard mapping, not a return to drawing.
